As the 2019 General Elections draw nearer, journalists in the Bauchi State have pledged full support to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the successful conduct of the polls.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Comrade Ibrahim Mallam Goje, made the pledge today while speaking at the Stakeholders Meeting with the State Resident Electoral Commissioner at the INEC office, Bauchi.
Comrade Mallam Goje who described journalists as major stakeholders in election matters, called on INEC to provide members of the union the enabling environment to enable them conduct their duty effectively.
He recalled that journalists in the state have been playing their expected role of informing and educating the public on elections and other important matters for the progress of the state and the nation in general.
The NUJ Chairman informed the meeting that plans are in the pipeline by the Union to train journalists in the state on election coverage ahead of next year’s elections.
Comrade Goje, therefore, called on INEC to consider the release of more vehicles to the Union for election monitoring across the state as well as the provision of enough Press Tags for onward distribution to members assigned to cover the elections.
The Chairman who advised the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) not to entertain any journalist from outside the state, said in order to prevent quacks from parading themselves as journalists, the commission ought to liaise with the Union to ascertain genuine journalists.
He called on the REC to live his doors for the press during election period to prevent the spread of fake news.
